چکیده

This paper develops a quantitative model to predict the power of coolant penetration into the grinding zone of a segmented wheel. The model accounts for the coolant properties and system design characteristics governing the penetration mechanism revealed by the theory established in Part 1 of this series study. By coupling with the author’s previous mist formation analysis, the model offers a quantitative control guideline for the optimal use of grinding coolants. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The coolant penetration in grinding with segmented wheels—part 1: mechanism and comparison with conventional wheels

This paper aims to study the mechanism of coolant penetration into a wheel-work contact zone when a segmented or conventional wheel is used in surface grinding. Based on the principles of fluid motion and considerations of spin-off and splash, analytical models for both conventional and segmented wheels were developed for predicting the power of pumping coolant into the contact zone. It was rev...

Modelling of the mist formation in a segmented grinding wheel system

It has been found that using a segmented grinding wheel with a fluid chamber can significantly minimise the quantity of coolant while improving the ground surface integrity. The present investigation aims to explore the fluid flow mechanism in such a wheel system. To this end, the Weber theory for Newtonian jet instability was applied to quantitatively determine the contribution of coolant flow...

Analysis of Temperature Distribution in Grinding of Composites Using Finite Element Method

In this investigation, experiments were carried out to understand the influence of various grinding parameters like wheel speed, workspeed and depth of cut on the grinding temperature at the surface of the Al-SiCP composite workpiece with different grinding wheels. The temperature distribution within the workpiece was studied by simulating the grinding process and using finite element analysis ...

Increased Machine Tool Productivity Resulting from Coalescing Plate Filtration

This report provides results recorded from the application of a coalescing plate separator to grinding and lathe coolant filtration. Use of the filter and normal recommended practices in monitoring coolants significantly extended coolant life, increased the tool life of carbide inserts and grinding wheels an average of 25'10, and resulted in cleaner machines and coolant sumps. The use of deioni...

Study on Experimental and Modeling of Rotary Roll Dressing of Grinding Wheels

Two of the important parameters in grinding operation are surface roughness of the workpiece and the amount of consumed energy. These parameters are strongly affected by the condition of grinding wheel surface which is dependent on the dressing parameters. Predicting the roughness of the grinding wheel surface after dressing with known dressing parameters can improve the grinding process. Resea...
